If you haven't yet seen the unmissable "The Lost Daughter," available on Netflix since last year, now is the perfect time. Spetses takes center stage in this now iconic film by Maggie Gyllenhaal, starring Olivia Colman, nominated multiple times and awarded at the Venice Film Festival.
A Greek island, early summer. Beaches and streets devoid of tourists. On one side, a few locals, regulars like that family that takes up a lot of space, and that mother-daughter couple capturing everyone’s attention. On the other, a university professor, Leda, mysterious, silent, enigmatic.
Amidst this tranquil setting, a subtle and heavy unease permeates throughout the film. Repressed memories resurface, a well-hidden secret comes to light, an unutterable maternal guilt.
Filmed on the island of Spetses, Zogeria, Dapia, and Kounoupitsa are revealed with modesty.
An adaptation of the novel by Italian author Elena Ferrante, this magnificent film delicately addresses the pressure weighing on mothers, exploring the complexities of motherhood with subtlety and respect.
A must-see, to be watched and re-watched.
