The Koukaki neighborhood, located in the southeast of Athens, is famous and appreciated for its contrasts and paradoxes. On one hand, there’s history and the past with the Acropolis, and on the other hand, everything that Athens has in terms of contemporary and urban features. Tourists and locals share the same sidewalks, and as we delve deeper into the streets, each step invites us to experience a little more of the everyday life of a family-oriented neighborhood.
Like everywhere in Athens, cafes and restaurants line the streets of Koukaki. Among them, there’s one place you should know about : Thomas 1971. Located at 18 Dimitrakopoulou Street, this tavern, open since April, is undoubtedly one of the most authentic spots in the capital. Nestled right in front of the sublime St. John’s Church, Thomas 1971 embodies both the typical and familial ambiance of a traditional Taverna, offering a menu dedicated to Greek dishes such as Pastitsio and Moussaka with velvety béchamel sauce, lamb with seasonal green vegetables, grilled fish with roasted vegetables, that are sincere and faithful to classic recipes, expertly prepared by the two chefs Christos Papatheodorou and Dimitris Panagiotou.
Thomas 1971 is also the shared dream of three friends who never gave up on making it a reality. It’s the perfect place to take a break, to blend in with the locals, and to share, during a meal, the real life of the capital.
As you may have understood, Thomas 1971 is all about family, our own, in the literal sense, and we are thrilled and excited to share it with you. Don’t forget to tell Paul that we sent you.
Καλή όρεξη ! (Enjoy your meal !)
Thomas 1971, Dimitrakopoulou Street 18, Koukaki, Athens.
